In Impromptus today, I talk about being a conservative in a heavily liberal community. (I know I should have been reconciled to using the word “liberal” about the Left, long, long ago. I just haven’t.) I say that “they assume you are one of them . . ., because why wouldn’t you be? You don’t have horns and a tail. But let them know that you may, just may, have voted for Reagan or one of the Bushes — and then the horns and tail become obvious.”
Thought you would enjoy this letter from a reader — and National Review cruiser! — as I did:
“I was reminded of my delightful encounter with Karl Rove on last fall’s NR cruise. Some of my ‘progressive’ friends had given me a hard time before I left about being on the same ship with Mr. Rove. When I met him, I made some remark about how those friends would be surprised if I told them he didn’t have horns and a tail. He just grinned and said, ‘They’re retractable.’”
